Kahuku Medical Center is a community driven hospital, and likewise, its journey as an organization has been supported by the community. In 2007, when the KMC (then called Kahuku Hospital) was on the brink of shutting its doors, staff went door to door to gather signatures from the community to save the only emergency medical facility serving the Ko'olauloa area. Through hours of testimony at the State Capital and with the support of area legislators (especially Senator Clayton Hee and Representative Michael Magaoay), KMC eventually became an affiliate of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) in 2008.
