Discovery School began in 1973 when a group of parents (later known as the Upper Valley Montessori Society) organized to establish and charter a non-profit school organization. A special Garden of Memories is dedicated to honor the memory of Michael Cattaruzza. His mother, Mary Jo Tansel, continues to support the school and is grateful for the newly named addition to the school, The Michael Cattaruzza Center.
Our Philosophy
A Montessori education provides your child the opportunity to develop a life-long love of learning. It is a wonderful journey of discovery
Our Staff
The Discovery School is licensed by the State of Texas. All our teachers are certified Montessori instructors who have completed or will complete the rigorous academic and practical studies required in order to receive Montessori certification. Every Montessori teacher is assisted by a teacher’s aide.
Accreditation by SACS
In the 2003-2004 school year, the Discovery School staff, teachers, and Board of Trustees conducted a thorough self-study as part of the SACS accreditation process. The school received final accreditation through SACS last spring.
Classrooms
We have 15 mixed-age classrooms, each with a maximum of 24 students (except Toddler who have a 18 child limit) Mixed-age classrooms are just one of the ways in which Montessori schools create a sense of community. The children are not just students; they are mentors for each other–what better way for a child to learn than to teach or explain concepts to another child!
The Campus
The new Discovery School was built only 10 years ago, with the Montessori philosophy in mind. The hallway and the classrooms run in a curve around the school’s library. All the classrooms have their own little ‘backyard’ where the children can work as well as in the classrooms. The new multi-purpose building with 5 new classrooms and gymnasium has been completed and allows all extracurricular classes their own classroom setting.
We are International
All Montessori schools are to a degree international schools. They attract a diverse student body representing many ethnic backgrounds, countries, religions, and cultures. They actively celebrate their diversity. The curriculum is international in its heritage and focus, and is used to promote a global understanding and peace. This is especially true for The Discovery School. Our close proximity to the border between the United States and Mexico as well as the proximity to many maquiladoras in Reynosa (factory locations of international companies) has resulted in a student body that boasts 35 different nationalities from 4 continents
