Bedford County Fair in PA shared Bedford County 4-H's photo.
Dear 4-H and FFA members: OFFICE HOURS: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm - Monday - Friday As many of you may have heard, there are some changes to how we identify market animals this year due to some disease issues within the county. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture contacted Melanie regarding a positive case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), a very serious and highly contagious swine disease, in Bedford County. They have instructed us to cancel the tagging day on May 6 to safeguard swine producers in this county. Because many youth who exhibit market lambs and goat also exhibit hogs, this affects all three species. PED as well as other diseases such as Avian Influenza can spread very easily through equipment and vehicles, and by people. Therefore, we need to adjust the tagging procedure this year to reduce the risk of disease transmission. The Junior Livestock Sale Committee met last week and developed the following procedures for identifying market lambs, goats and hogs for this year. 1. 4-H and FFA members will be assigned tag numbers for each of their market lambs, goats and/or hogs. Tags will be available AFTER April 21. 2. Pick up and pay for tags at the Extension Office. Tag cost this year is $5 per tag. A Check is the preferred method of payment. Checks should be made out as follows: a. Make check for hog tags payable to “Bedford Fair Swine Committee” b. Make check for lamb tags payable to “Bedford Fair Sheep Committee” c. Make check for goat tags payable to “Bedford Fair Meat Goat Committee” 3. Take two photos of each animal. a. One photo should be a close up of the tag in the ear of the animal; we MUST be able to read the numbers in the entire tag from the photo. For sheep and goats, you must also be able to read the scrapie tag ID. (If you can’t read from one photo, you can submit two photos.) b. A second photo must be a side view of the animal showing that the ear tag is in place. 4. Return tagging form with photos stapled to form to the Extension Office by May 19. If mailing the forms, the letter must be postmarked by May 19. LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!! It is YOUR responsibility to pick up tags, tag your animals, and return tagging forms in a timely manner. We thank everyone for your cooperation!

The Loss Of A Friend The Bedford Fair's Auto and Harness Race Committees have lost a good friend in Rusty Fetter. Rusty was always willing to provide his time & equipment to assist with projects that were related to the Bedford race track facilities. He was our go to guy for heavy equipment work, never turning us down regardless of the compenstion available. Rusty was a man's man, tough as nails but with a heart of gold. He fought his battle with cancer the same way he lived his life, with genuine grit and determination. The Bedford Fair Race Committees honors the life of Rusty Fetter, and sends our condolances to his family and many friends.
