The Akron Area YMCA is asking residents to "Double the Difference" when it comes to water safety for area children. The #AkronSwims initiative will match donations dollar for dollar up to $1,000 through the end of April to offer free water safety training to area children. Along with other community partners, we're a proud supporter of this program through our grant-making. According to the YMCA, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 through 14, and African-American children are three times as likely to drown as their white peers. April is Autism Awareness Month, and here in Akron and in Summit County, there are a number of people and organizations helping to advocate and heighten awareness for residents with autism. Like the Center for Applied Drama & Autism, a Millennium Fund for Children grantee and donor-advised recipient, who offers theatre classes and performances to help residents on the autism spectrum better sharpen their social skills.
