Beckett & Raeder, Inc. is at The Eastside Community Network.
Detroit's Eastside Community Network, a non-profit committed to empowering its lower eastside residents to plan for their future, has embarked on a community engagement process with facilitation and coordination assistance from the Michigan Association of Planning and several professional planning firms, including Beckett & Raeder (BRI). For the last six months, BRI has attended meetings with residents who have mapped their communities using the CDAD typology, expressed their vision for their neighborhoods, and celebrated their successful developments along Anges Street and in Chandler Park. It was an evening to remember with food, poetry, and music. As a part of a truly community-driven effort, BRI is pleased to be a part of the process of rebuilding Detroit in this neighborhood.

He noted that Ishpeming's three-block cluster of distictive buildings give it a unique advantage: "Placemaking is what draws people to a community, and historic buildings are a large part of that." Beckett & Raeder Inc. (BRI) and the City of Sturgis had a successful kick-off meeting this week, marking the initial steps of the master planning process. The kick-off promoted conversation of upcoming interviews with stakeholders, a community wide survey, and specific topics of interest to the public. Marisa Laderach, a planner with BRI mentioned that the company had won more Master Plan awards than any other planning firm in the state, stating, “We’re going to make you a really great plan that you’re going to be really excited about." Beckett & Raeder Inc. (BRI) has been participating in a local youth employment & mentorship program called Summer17. University of Michigan, Michigan Works! Association, and Washtenaw County have partnered to make Summer17 a successful nine-week summer employment program for youth in the area. BRI was fortunate to work with Atabong Khumbah, a hardworking driven student at Washtenaw International High School. Atabong spent his time at BRI designing infographics, analyzing socio-economic statistics, and preparing community engagement and outreach materials. He has a bright future and has been a major help at our Ann Arbor headquarters. Good luck and thank you for all your hard work, Atabong!

Evart is one of ten communities in Michigan selected by the state to participate in Project Rising Tide. The Rising Tide program aims to create vibrant, thriving communities that attract business investments and talent by producing a sustainable path toward economic stability and growth. As part of the program, Evart is undergoing a Master Plan update, Zoning Ordinance update, and new Capital Improvement Plan, while crafting economic development strategies and receiving other various forms of technical assistance. Beckett & Raeder, Inc. (BRI) in partnership with the City, MEDC, MSHDA, and MichiganWorks! facilitated the discussion on workforce development and housing strategies during a stakeholder strategy session held at the City of Evart’s City Hall. The meeting focused on how to increase affordable housing options and boost local employment throughout the City. A reporter from the Herald Review Newspaper attended the session on June 14th and wrote an article about the meeting. Results from the stakeholders’ brainstorming session “showed a need for affordable and safe housing, and stable, well-paying employment which provides benefits and health care as keys to improve the workforce,” stated the reporter. BRI is now working on incorporating the existing economic data, housing data, and stakeholder input to produce an action plan that fulfills the community’s vision.
