Did you know that saying "Bless You" to someone who just sneezed started in the Middle Ages when people were dying from Bubonic Plague (Black Death). Sneezing was a sign that the plague was coming on a person. Saying "Bless You" was thought to be a way of warding off the evil spirits that caused plague. The nursery rhyme "Ring around the Rosie" refers to the consequences of that same illness. Today we know that sneezing doesn't carry serious consequences for most people. Most of the time sneezing is caused by an environmental irritant or minor viral infection. There are, however, people with asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema) who are very sensitive to pollen, dust, fragrances, and other irritants. Such triggers sometimes cause exacerbations that might even lead to hospitalization. Fragrances can also cause other problems such as triggering migraines or aggravating eczema. So, for those reasons we are asking our patients to refrain from wearing heavy perfumes when coming to the office. Now you know!
