October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month October has been designated as National Safety and Protection Month by the PALS Foundation. Its mission is to observe and promote the appropriate ways to protect and care for domestic and wild animals and help people strengthen their skills for staying safe around animals. Central Veterinary Associates offers the following tips: • Be sure your pets get their annual checkups and any necessary medications or medical treatments. • When having animals outside, make sure they are in an enclosed area where they cannot run away. If you do have them in an open area, be sure they have a leash or restraining device so they do not stray too far. • Make sure your pet has some sort of identification on him or her. If possible, have your pet microchipped so, if he or she gets lost, they can be tracked. • Do not feed them human food. Some foods consumed by humans can make your pets sick, resulting in severe illnesses, even death. • If your pet has his or her own bed or cage, be sure to clean their bed or cage lining regularly. It is important that anyone who owns an animal keeps their pets' health up to date and that his or her surroundings are in a safe environment, When owning a pet, protecting them from any existing dangers should be a number one priority. In the event your pets becomes sick or injured, take them to a veterinarian immediately. We also suggest a pet first aid kit for emergencies, then get them to a veterinarian for medical care.
