Alger Bikes

Tom Walquist founded Alger Bike Center on Eastern Avenue in Alger Heights, in 1957. Tom added the Schwinn name a few years later and in 1968 moved the store to its' current location on 28th Street in Wyoming. Tom's son Carl took over the business in 1972, he was asked to take over the family business in a letter as he was serving in Vietnam at the time and Tom didn't want to go through the effort of moving the business unless one of his children wanted to take it over. Carl has run the business for last 40 years, experimenting with many different brands and styles of bicycles over the years (Fuji, Cannondale, Fischer, Panasonic, Santa Cruz, Airborne, Scott, Raleigh, GT). Alger has a great history with 3 brands in particular: Cannondale, Fuji and of course Schwinn, you'll find these 3 brands plus GT BMX bikes and the Niner brand at Alger today.
The Rapid Wheelmen bike club held it's first meetings in the back of Alger Bike Center in Alger Heights.
Fitness equipment was added in the 1980's to help generate some business during the winter. Schwinn produced several different types of exercise bikes before finally finding the right product in the Airdyne. Even today Alger Bikes sells Airdynes, Treadmills and Ellipticals.
Alger Bikes is well known for it's service department repairing nearly any variety and style of bike or fitness equipment at reasonable rates.
Alger also offers custom bike fitting using the Fit Kit system.
As any good bike shop should, Alger also has skilled wheel builders on staff.
Alger carries a huge variety of components, accessories and clothing (customers regularly comment on our vast selection). Brands include: Velocity, Easton, Shimano, SRAM, Fizik, Serfas, Blackburn, Giro, Bell, Continental, Origin 8, Sunlite, CamelBak, Profile and more.
Last but of course not least, stop in and take a spin on a unicycle, if it's got wheels on it, we'll try to ride it!
