History • Founded in 1849 by Reverend Newton Pinckney Walker as a private School for the Deaf • School for the Blind established in 1855 • Became a state school in 1856 • Cedar Springs Academy started in 1977
Governance The work of the school is overseen by the school’s president and an all volunteer board of commissioners appointed by the governor. The 10-member board includes representatives of each of the state’s six congressional districts, blind community, deaf community, sensory multidisabled community, and the state at large.
Ex officio board members include the State Superintendent of Education, and a Commissioner of the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Facilities The main campus in Spartanburg in located on 160 acres and has 38 buildings. The Statewide Division of Outreach Services main office is located in Columbia, with personnel traveling throughout the state.
