In pursuit of its mission to create transformative experiences, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) has embarked upon a Neuroscience Initiative. At the core of this undertaking is the hypothesis that the design of art experiences will benefit from research findings derived across the diverse array of fields that comprise “neuroscience.” Tedi Asher, PhD has held the position of Neuroscience Researcher at PEM since April 2017. Her talk will introduce the Neuroscience Initiative, detailing its origins, sharing exemplary data from the neuroscience literature, and discussing how such findings could be applied to the process of designing art experiences. Among the topics to be covered are the neuroscience of attention and the relationship between the structure of our visual system and the nature of our visual perceptions. An important element of PEM’s Neuroscience Initiative is evaluation of the new and varied approaches implemented during the design process. Asher will address PEM’s evolving approach to evaluation and what can be learned about neural function by observing visitors in PEM’s galleries. The talk will include the opportunity to pose questions about why and how neuroscience research findings can inform the process of designing art experiences. _____________________________ About the Presenter: Tedi Asher, PhD, is the Neuroscience Researcher at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, MA, USA. She joined PEM in the spring of 2017 after completing her PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Harvard Medical School. As the first neuroscientist on staff at an American art museum, Asher helps to inform the Museum’s design strategies by analyzing emerging neuroscientific findings and recommending ways to increase engagement and visitor impact. She has a long-standing interest in deciphering the mechanisms underlying human emotional experience, a pursuit she is actively engaged in at PEM. _____________________________ A light lunch will be served.
