Schoolcraft Community Library

In 1987 there was no library in Schoolcraft, Michigan. The community depended on the visits of the Kalamazoo Public Library’s Bookmobile.

By 1988, thanks to a determined cadre of community volunteers and one employee, the Schoolcraft Community Library began to serve a grateful public from a storefront on Grand Avenue. The collection might have been slim, but hopes were high.

The Friends of the Library spearheaded a capital campaign that resulted in the community’s first public library, built in 1990 on donated land across the street from the popular Burch Park in the center of the village. With a permanent home, the library began to grow into the role defined by its mission statement:

"To be a community information center, connecting people of all ages to reading, lifelong learning and professional and personal enrichment. Working together, we strive to provide equal access to information, ideas and knowledge through books, programs and other resources and technologies."

Now 2010 finds the Library ready to launch into an exciting new chapter of service and opportunity – an expansion that will double the size and expand the library’s ability to meet the growing needs of Schoolcraft and surrounding communities.
