New York’s Lower east side is packed with edgy, up-and-coming contemporary art. With the New Museum at its helm, Art Smart’s Lower East Side Gallery district tour guides you through the most popular and relevant art galleries selecting options according to your tastes. Our most favorite galleries are Canada, Eleven Rivington, Miquel Abreau, James Fuentes, Salon 94 and On Stellar Rays.

Sascha Braunig’s portraits are unique and different from traditional portraiture. She often masks the faces with various shiny textures and choses to match the backgrounds with the color of the figures. More and more contemporary art enthusiasts are embracing the naïve vibrancy of self-taught artists. This has become a kind of trademark for the millennial artists who express their ideas in raw, modern expressions. A wonderful example is Matthew Clifford Green. In his first solo New York exhibition, this LA artist presents his abstract and rudimentary interpretation of figuration. His work displays a wide range of human emotions ranging from joyful exhilaration to quiet alienation. Check out this vibrant exhibition at the Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, 327 Broome Street.

Pipilotti Rist's Hugely Popular 'Pixel Forest' Show is probably the most Instagrammed art installation of this season. The psychedelic installation with over 3000 color changing LED lights makes for a very trippy #Instagram post. We strongly recommend this visual inspiration because you can clearly see the evolution and use of contemporary technologies in art, ranging from television monitor to smartphones. The strong connection between the biological with the electronics is beautifully depicted in this three - floor exhibition. Head to the New Museum on Bowery Street soon as the show ends on January 15th, 2017.
“Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest” will mark the first New York survey of the work of Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist.
