Over the past 90 years, the Hilo Woman’s Club has:
1. Established the Girls’ Detention Home for dependent girls under court jurisdiction until the Salvation Army placed the Home under its wing.
2. Created the Hilo playground system by providing a playground director and assisting in the management of Lincoln Park until the county assumed responsibility.
3. Created the Hilo branch of the Humane Society and paid a caretaker until the County eventually took over several years later.
4. Sponsored musical artists and concerts from 1924-1954.
5. Collected trash and planted many trees and flowers in beautification projects through out the years.
6. Sponsored the collection of funds to develop Liliuokalani Park and donated the Japanese Pagoda.
7. Greeted troop ships and sent flowers to Hilo soldier’s funerals during WWII. Three members served in the Army WAAC or Navy WAVES.
8. Sponsored children for YWCA and Girl Scout camperships during the 1950-60s.
9. Started a scholarship program in 1953 for East Hawaii women. The program has been ongoing since that time and is now open for both men and women.
10. Assisted the Red Cross in “Operation Stopover” for servicemen on their way to duty in Vietnam.
11. Opened the Pink Elephant Thrift Shop in May, 1956 and kept it open for 50 years.
12. Adopted support of Destination Hilo and the Aloha Room at the pier to welcome cruise ship visitors.
The Club was known for its fabulous flower shows from the 1920s-1968, fashion shows, wine and cheese tasting, and Oktoberfests. The last two events have been rekindled in the past 2 years. In 1969, land was purchased for a clubhouse which was completed in 1977; the mortgage was happily burned in 1993.
The Club has always been a supporter of Hilo’s medical facilities from visitations in the early years to donations of equipment and money to the current day. Services and funds have been donated through the years to many worthy causes: we were instrumental in eliminating billboards and creating a sign ordinance; we continue our commitment to assisting the community and educating its members in the areas of civic and personal interest.
