Port Pre-School, Inc. was a pioneering venture for the City of Port Washington. In 1966, mothers within the community were concerned that the city was without some kind of organized activity for pre-schoolers. After forming a committee to study the various types of pre-schools, both church-sponsored and independent cooperatives, the committee decided that the pre-school would be a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-discriminatory, cooperative pre-school maintained and operated by its members. This decision reflected the desire of the committee members to provide the community with a program available to the greatest number of children. Virginia Clarahan, Sally Puckett, Suzanne Mayhew, Beverly Tutas and Lenore Lindquist opened the doors of Port Pre-School, Inc. for the first time in October 1967.
