21st Century Total Wellness

Hi my name is Dan Prater, I am board certified naturopath with a private practice in cedar Lake Indiana approx. 45 minutes south of Chicago. I also have a very successful out of state consultation practice where I am able to work with my clients by phone/email/texting, as well as web cam skype and video phone.

The word naturopathy is a Latin-Greek hybrid, which means 'being close to or benefiting from nature.' Naturopathy provides the individual with the tools necessary to restore their body's own healing capabilities through natural methods. Naturopathy also recognizes that there is a time and a place for all interventions.

We encourage each client to think in terms of their own self-involvement as being the most powerful tool for maintaining and restoring health. 21st Century Total Wellness LLC is here to assist each client to continue on the path of ultimately becoming his or her own best advocate.

We seek to serve each person with compassion, quality care, and excellence in service. We strive to utilize all of our given resources and remember that ultimately healing and health are gifts from God.

My journey into natural medicine and therapies began in 1987 with the study of martial arts, manual and manipulative therapies, and nutrition. My research in health, wellness, and athletics indicated that specific physical activities combined with specific food selection would yield specific results. During my research, I concluded that the combined practice of various Eastern and Western arts and sciences had the potential to bring positive changes to the human mind and body. This is a basic tenant of naturopathy.

I became passionate about these ideas and desired to educate and empower people to make positive health choices for their minds and bodies based on natural alternatives.
This concept originated with Hippocrates (460-377) and the motto of Vis Medicatrix Naturae and continues is medicine, and physical activity is a necessary part of daily life.
From 1987 to 2000, I traveled extensively in order to participate in seminars and lectures, which focused on different cultural aspects of nutrition, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, sports medicine, and several different forms of martial arts.

My formal studies resulted in:
Full Instructorship Certification (Martial Arts) 2001
Bachelor of Science in Natural Health 2004
Therapeutic Lifestyle Certifications 2005
Doctoral in Naturopathy (ND) 2011

In addition to Doctor of Naturopathy, I have certifications or licenses in occupational therapy, sports medicine, and athletic training. I have practiced in just about every setting available: hospitals, skilled nursing/therapy facilities, outpatient clinics, and for the last 12 years my private practice. My extensive experience in multiple and diverse settings has deepened my passion to offer both comprehensive and complimentary naturopathic intervention.

From 2004 to 2008, I owned and operated two freestanding clinics and averaged 40-50 appointments weekly. I concluded from this experience that restructuring the clinic, , and the scheduling of clients was both necessary and beneficial!

Our new clinic is setup to service both walk-in appointments and out of state clients. This approach gives me the opportunity to collaborate with you regardless of your geographical location.

My business motto is 'First, do no harm." This concept is central to the broad spectrum of my experience in complementary, holistic, and alternative interventions.

There is a time and a place for all interventions; the key to achieving health is knowing which one at what time.

My personal goal is to provide each client with professional, comprehensive, and compassionate naturopathic care.

Updates
In July 2013, my wife and I completed building a house with an in-home office and clinic in Cedar Lake, Indiana. I am a Army veteran who served our country during Desert Storm and a person of faith who believes in the priority of God, family and occupation.

After 18 years of private practice I designed this new office with the goal to consult with one client at a time, averaging 45-60 minutes for all office visits.

I believe one of your most important investments is your health, thank you for the opportunity to partner with you!

Avid Practitioner and Advocate for Natural Health,

Dan Prater, ND
