Open burning is allowed inside the Baker City limits starting Saturday, the Baker City Fire Department has announced. Fires had been prohibited for several weeks due to dry, hot weather. A current burn permit is required for outside burning. Permits can be obtained at the fire department at 1616 Second St. during regular business hours.

Ash Grove Cement Company, the Kansas firm that owns and operates the cement plant in Durkee, announced in a news release Wednesday that its board of directors has unanimously approved the company’s merger with CRH plc. Based in Dublin, Ireland, CRH is the parent company for an international group of diversified building materials businesses which are engaged in the manufacture and supply of a wide range of building materials. UPDATE: Westbound lanes of Interstate 84 have re-opened between Mileposts 265 and 261 near La Grande. Westbound lanes were closed for a few hours this morning after a belly dump truck lost part of its load of asphalt about 3:30 a.m.. A passenger car hit the asphalt and the dump truck. No injuries have been reported.
