"These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If the had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city." Hebrews 11:13-16 So many who never got to see the earthly fulfillment of God's promises (though I have zero doubt that their current heavenly position has them regretting that), and who despite the temptation to let that deter their faith, they continued to maintain that earth wasn't their home anyway. They saw their alien status and didn't hide from it. How could they have possibly done such a thing?? Their belief in both God's existence and His kindness convinced them that their permanent home existed too and that because He was good, so was the place He was preparing for them in heaven. It would have been easy to use the escape route of wishing things could go back to how they used to be, but they had LET GOD CHANGE THEIR DESIRES. Their desires had been purified and clarified to wanting something better (Psalm 37:4). They fixed their eyes on the permanent and their desires followed. And the sweetness is that BECAUSE their desires were godly, God delighted to be associated with them and made them a city worthy for His people. Lord, stir our affections toward You today; change what is faulty in our thinking and broken in our hearts so that our desires might be in line with Yours. Amen.

"By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised." Hebrews 11:11 Sarah's faith believed when the worldly odds were against her, when all evidence was to the contrary. She experienced the grace of God through the gift of her son, but that wasn't her only present. Oh no. She got to know her God better, that He was not only some kind of generous Giver but that He was powerful enough to do humanly impossible things. Her faith in this God put her heart in the proper position to receive what He was holding out to her. After years of not hearing the pitter patter of feet in her home or the infectious giggle of one she could call hers, her faith could have turned to bitterness and disdain at her God, but it did not. That's not to say she didn't struggle in it as clearly the situation with Hagar or the laughter at the announcement of the good news shows, but she is COMMENDED here in Hebrews. Perhaps it was because her faith was such that she didn't see her God as holding out ON her but holding on TO her. Oh what a heart-renovating truth! God saw such faith and rewarded the way she clung fast to Him! Yes, Lord, may our hearts cling so tightly to You today, choosing to believe You when our circumstances look bleak. Thank You for being so worthy of all of our trust.
