James Billings of NY City (former Somersville resident) proposed in his will that he would give $2 for every dollar raised up to $10,000. A group of Somersville Congregationalists raised the $5,000 (my calculation is actually $5,625) to organize the church. In 1871 I don't know how they were able to raise $5,000+. It truly is "The Little Church that Could."
