Happiness Is Camping (HIC), founded in 1982, is one of the longest operating residential summer camps in the country dedicated exclusively to children with cancer and other related serious illnesses. Situated on 150 acres in scenic Hardwick, New Jersey, HIC is accredited by the American Camp Association, as well as Children’s Oncology Camps of America. The camp is offered to boys and girls aged 6-15 and serves over 300 children each summer. The camp is free to all, supported by donations and volunteer medical staff and counselors.
For more than three decades over 18,000 children from greater than 25 hospitals have attended HIC. The volunteer medical staff–doctors and nurses from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children–provide medical supervision of the highest quality with services for children at risk of bleeding and infection, those requiring chemotherapy, or with significant physical disabilities. These specialized medical services are not offered at most camps.
HIC gives children with devastating illnesses a chance to have fun in a safe environment. Equally important, it provides their families with much needed respite from the difficult task of caring for their sick child. HIC also allows siblings of children with cancer to attend camp, so they feel special, too. When children leave camp saying, “This was the best week of my life,” we know that Happiness Is Camping has succeeded in its mission.
