At CRA, we believe that the following 12 items are essential basic considerations toward planning and managing for a successful retirement:

Financial literacy is fundamental. What you don’t know can hurt you.
Retirement planning doesn’t have to be difficult, but it does take time, tools, resources, and knowledge.
With the advancement of technology, investments are easier to buy and sell than ever before. But knowing what, why, and when to buy (and sell) will never be commoditized.
The framework of the financial industry is generally not designed in a manner to benefit the consumer. But knowing what you need, don’t need, can afford, and can’t afford can help you level the playing field and better benefit from what the financial industry has to offer. This is a key reason for having a financial plan.
The phrase, “Nobody will look after #1 as well as I do.” is still true, unless somebody else knows how to look after #1 better than you do. Having the interest and knowledge is not the same thing.
It’s cheaper and less expensive to learn from other people’s mistakes instead of your own. If you have never retired before, learning from the mistakes and overlooked opportunities others have made can be priceless. Cheap and inexpensive are not the same things. And cheap information can lead to very costly mistakes in retirement.
There are no monopolies on good ideas. Even if you are confident you know what you are doing, perhaps someone can help you do it better. But again, what you don’t know can hurt you.
There is no “I” in TEAM. But there is an “I” in WIN. If you are the primary decision maker in your family, how will your spouse or family continue what you have started after you are no longer able? Don’t make them fend for themselves. But do take an interest now to get the assistance you need so you all win.
The foundation to a successful retirement and the most overlooked aspects of financial planning are to simplify and organize your finances. This is often assumed, but rarely implemented.
Your wealth is not just your money; your wealth is also your time. Consequently, a successful retirement is not one where you spend all of your time managing your wealth.
Know CRA’s ABC’s of consumer awareness. A – Know what the “Advantage” is to you of what you are buying. B – Know what the “Benefit” is to the person or company making the offer. C – Know what the “Cost” is, not just in dollars, but also in time and sacrifice.
Retirement should be best years of your life. You’ve worked hard for it. You deserve proper advice, planning, and appropriate recommendations to help make your retirement successful.
