The Archdiocese of Baltimore, established as the first Catholic diocese in the United States in 1789, comprises the City of Baltimore and Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard and Washington Counties. Archbishop William E. Lori, 16th Archbishop of Baltimore, is the pastoral leader of the more than 500,000 registered Catholics in the Archdiocese. Bishops Mitchell T. Rozanski and Denis J. Madden are his auxiliary bishops. More than 500 priests, active and retired, live in the Archdiocese, which is home to 153 parishes, 86 Catholic schools, 5 Catholic hospitals.
