Friends Lake Inn

The Friends Lake Inn has regional historical significance. Originally known as Murphy's Friends Lake Inn, this landmark was built in the 1860's. It provided a "home away from home" for men working in the local tannery. By the Prohibition Era, the Inn had become one of a number of popular Adirondack summer retreats. Guests disembarked from the New York-North Creek train at the "Glen" rail stop (now rte. 28) and reached the inns by horse-drawn carriage. Ladies and gentlemen would dress in fomal attire and start with cocktails at the "Grill" across the street, come back to the Inn's Main Dining Room for dinner and return to the "Grill" for dancing to a "House Band." As car travel become a way of life, motels became the preferred lodging for vacationers in the Lake George area, ending the glory days of the Adirondack grand hotels. A victim of the times, the Inn closed in 1969 and was vacant for 15 years. In 1983, Greg and Sharon Taylor purchased the Friends Lake Inn and began the major restoration. The Inn is the only hotel/restaurant still operating on Friends Lake. In July 2004 John and Trudy Phillips, of Sandwich Massachusetts, purchased the Friends Lake Inn. They had an inner craving for the mountains and started looking for a small luxury property in the Northeast. Immediately they fell in love with the whole aura of the Friends Lake Inn from the Inn itself as well as the restaurant and wine "offerings." The Inn's wine list is recognized as one of the best in the world and has recieved the coveted "Grand Award" from the Wine Spectator magazine since 1997. Like the exceptional quality of the wine list, the dining also is regionally acclaimed. In 1998, the restaurant was recognized with a DiRoNa (Distinguished Restaurant of North America) award for exemplary dining. The Inn is nationally celebrated as a upscale country inn with luxurious acommodations and is part of the Select Registry's group of small luxury Inns. The atmosphere, charm and hospitality that the Murphy family began over 100 years ago continues to welcome guests from not only New York City, but from around the world. Guests no longer arrive via horse and buggy, but the destination is the same, relaxing lake days and friendly nights.
