Audubon Society Of Greater Denver

Since 1969, the Audubon Society of Greater Denver (ASGD) has educated and provided high quality, multi-generational programs for over 125,000 children and adults, accomplished major conservation efforts to protect birds, other wildlife, and habitats, and funded over 40 research projects for non-game wildlife.

Education: ASGD provides science education programs for elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Greater Denver region, offering activities at schools and at the Audubon Center at Chatfield. These programs meet the new Colorado science standards. Home schools, senior centers, and other groups also participate in our education programs.

At the Audubon Center at Chatfield State Park, our public programs for all ages cover a variety of topics, such as birds, wildflowers, mammals, insects, habitats, and general outdoor exploration. Events include Great Backyard Bird Count, Volunteers Days, our popular Bird Banding throughout May, and the HOOTenanny.

We offer local, national, and international field trips and travel opportunities for adults. Our focus is birds, other wildlife, and habitats, with the goal of providing an educational adventure beyond just a guided trip.

Adult classes include Beginning Birdwatching taught by Colorado’s foremost birders, Hugh and Urling Kingery, and for those interested in a more intense course, our Audubon Master Birder program offers one year of classroom learning and field experience.

Conservation: Our Conservation Committee follows legislative activities and watches for projects or proposals that might adversely affect bird populations, other wildlife or habitats. ASGD has been instrumental in major victories, such as the creation of Barr Lake State Park, support for many open space acquisitions, helping found Great Outdoors Colorado, and the conversion of much of Rocky Mountain Arsenal to a national wildlife refuge. Research: Through the Lois Webster Fund, we support non-game wildlife research throughout Colorado.

Bluebird Project: Members and volunteers work to improve bluebird populations in Colorado by offering programs and building, selling, and monitoring bluebird nest boxes.
