On August 30, 2009, the last Sunday in August, the pending merger of two Christian communities began in earnest. Harper Chapel of Norwalk, CA moved its’ membership 11 miles north, up the 405 freeway to Hashaway Community Church located in the city of Long Beach at 1953 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave and we became Bethel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
This is not the first time that Hashaway Community Church has had a name change. At its’ inception in 1945, it began as St. Vestal CME Church until the 1993 Southern California Annual Conference Delegates voted to rename the church in memory of the late Rev. Nathaniel C. Hashaway.
Both St. Vestal CME and Hashaway Community CME have served this community well, and will continue to do so as we strengthen and grow under the name of Bethel CME Church. A significant remembrance of its past is being shown in an humbling manner.
Our thanks to Council Member Dee Andrews, 6th District for honoring this historical church during the MLK Peace and Unity Parade on January 16, 2010. The Parade theme was “Strength to Love” taken from Dr. King’s book of the same name which was published in 1963.
Our Pastor, the Reverend Napoleon Goshay, cordially extends an open invitation to the Long Beach Community to come and worship with the Bethel CME family. Our Sunday School begins at 9:30 am where a spirited learning experience can be expected at each class; at 11:00 am our worship service is held. On Wednesday night at 7:30 pm, we have Bible Study and on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm there is Choir Rehearsal.
