A new oyster reef for our Norfolk neighbors! Hermitage Museum and Gardens
Exciting news! A brand new oyster reef is being installed off the bulkhead at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens. The 2 acre reef (that's huge!) was funded by the City of Norfolk through a Hurricane Sandy relief grant. Chesapeake Bay Foundation will plant baby oysters on top of the reef once construction is complete. Once the oyster larvae attach to a surface, such as the deposited oyster shells, they become known as spat. Dense clusters of adult oysters form oyster reefs (also called beds). Check out this link for more spat facts: Photos submitted by Yolima C. and Michael B.
