Desserts by Rita is a small bakery based in Bishopville, MD, but reaches to Havre de Grace where Rita, the owner and operator, herself, grew up. Rita moved from Harford County to Ocean City, MD, and worked as a cake maker for the Garden Restaurant on 145th street in Ocean City. Rita was already known for her sweet touch in the kitchen when the restaurant’s owner asked her to sweeten up their dessert menu. This was where the original creamy Lemon Lust and the tropical Rita’s delight were born. Rita began baking for the Garden in 1977 and by 1985 she had her own shop in the 45th street shopping center. One year after opening Rita was quoted by a local newspaper saying “This is it ,from here on out, there will always be a Desserts by Rita.”
