In 1975, farmworkers living in substandard living conditions in Cabrillo Village (Saticoy, CA) received eviction notices from the labor camp's grower-owners. Rather than lose their homes, residents organized to form the Cabrillo Improvement Association (CIA). Community strength triumphed and resident families each contributed $1,000 to successfully purchase the land.
In 1981, the CIA broadened its activities and became the Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation, which continues to bring the spirit of Cabrillo Village to affordable housing initiatives.
