Howard Brown Health Center was founded 40 years ago to address the sexual health needs of gay and bisexual men, at a time when no other agency in Chicago provided effective, culturally competent care to this population. With the onset of the AIDS crisis, Howard Brown Health Center quickly became the Midwest’s most reliable source for HIV education and a leading participant in nationally-recognized HIV/AIDS research. Since then, HBHC has expanded its scope to address the growing and unique health concerns of all LGBTQ individuals by providing affirming and appropriate medical care and social services. Today, Howard Brown Health Center serves more than 8,000 youth and adult clients annually, through its diverse health and social service delivery system focused around seven major programmatic divisions: primary medical care, behavioral health, research, HIV/STD prevention, youth services, elder services, and women's services through the Lesbian Community Care Project.
