DESCRIPTION
The board of county commissioners is the chief legislative body in the county. The board meets Tuesdays for its work sessions, and Thursdays for voting purposes, both at 10 at Executive Plaza, board room, first floor, 330 Pine St., Williamsport, PA.

The three county commissioners are elected for four-year terms by voters and represent the county in which they reside. The board approves the county budget, adopts local ordinances and resolutions, and establishes policies which govern the county and ensure the health, safety and welfare of the citizens. It is the commissioners’ responsibility to manage the governmental affairs of the county and its employees.

The current board is Chairman Jeff C. Wheeland; Vice Chairman Ernest P. Larson; and Secretary Tony R. Mussare.

Lycoming County was formed on April 13, 1795 from Northumberland County, and was named for Lycoming Creek. The first county commissioners were John Hanna, Thomas Forster and James Crawford.

The county is the largest county in area in Pennsylvania. As of 2013, the population was about 116,754. Williamsport is its largest city and is the county seat.
