Friends, here’s an awesome article about A-1 Builders’ new status as a worker-owned cooperative. Thanks Bellingham Herald and writer, Dave Gallagher!
When Rick Dubrow and Cindi Landreth began pondering passing their business on to someone else, they were not excited about selling it to strangers.

PRESS RELEASE for A-1 Builders, A Worker-Owned Cooperative Effective 7-1-17 For 62 years A-1 Builders has served Whatcom County, providing design/build construction services, specializing in existing structures: remodeling; repairs; historical renovation… specialists in property preservation and home improvement. It’s time now for prior owners Rick Dubrow and Cindi Landreth to step aside and hand the baton over to the 5 founding co-owners of A-1 Builders, A Design/Build, Worker-Owned Cooperative. Below is a photo of the new co-owners. Referring to the image titled ‘members on the porch’, from left to right, they are: Bobbi Plata, Justus Peterson, Patrick Martin, Shawn Serdahl and Maggie Bates. Together they have worked here for 56 combined years, eager to take an ownership role in furthering our history of promoting sustainable business and sustainable building practices in the work we do. “Work it; own it!” A simple yet profound expression of the power of a worker-owned cooperative, whereby the people who have helped to forge an organization’s success share more fully in that success, and share greater power in its governance. This IRS-recognized, Subchapter-T corporate structure provides us with this model, and the excitement generated by this empowerment is extraordinary. This drives one of our coop’s goals: to serve as an attractive succession model for other business owners approaching retirement, or who are simply exploring alternative business structures. “I have utmost confidence in the new team that will steer this new ship”, says former owner Rick Dubrow. “Same crew; new ship. A stronger, more resilient ship, bringing far more democracy into the work place… as it should be. “The cooperative business model was so attractive to Cindi and me when we began to explore alternative succession plans. Most attractive of all is the model’s recognition that the very people who have built an organization should thrive as a result of their effort. “Furthermore, cooperation provides a model more resilient to internal or external economic shocks, something the history of cooperatives amply provides. So many successful cooperatives were born as the result of economic hardship; again, more resilient to survive shocks to the system. Though such a shock didn’t spark our coop’s creation, this model does provide stability and strength moving forward.” For additional information please contact Patrick Martin, General Manager and co-owner of the new worker-owned cooperative [360-319-5066; patrick@a1builders.ws; www.a1builders.ws ]
