In 1997, three women working in local churches saw a need to assist individuals and families who came to the churches' doors requesting help. They say the need to insure that the churches' allocated funds for "walk-in" assistance were being used to help those truly in need and to take some of the responsibility for making those decisions off of the ministers and church staff.
Now seventeen years old, EWIM has grown. It continues to be supported by 30 "covenant" churches, as well as local businesses, service organizations and individuals. In 2013 we assisted 1,000 families and gave $75,000 in assistance. After an intake process, the ministry is able to offer help with rent, utilities, car repair, prescriptions, as well as food and gas vouchers. We partner with the Immaculate Conception Church food pantry and the First United Methodist Church clothes closet to help clients with food and clothing needs. Both churches are located steps from our doors.
