MFA began over 30 years ago with one couple, Lois & Ernie Baumann. Lois & Ernie saw the need to provide an opportunity for low income parents to give their children fun and educational activities in the arts. They started with a small dance studio and soon added tumbling instruction. In 1979 they opened Stairway of the Stars Dance Studio and Mr. Ernie's Flip Flop & Fly Tumbling School.
In 1996 with the help of concerned parents and community members the Maywood Fine Arts Association was established as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation. Their goal was to combat the escalating rate of drug activity, gang involvement, and teenage pregnancy by providing the young people of Maywood and surrounding communities with healthy after school and weekend activities in fine and performing arts.
