Co-founders Tom Johnson and Jim Wilcoxson established Ruby Lane in January 1998. The impetus for establishing a website catering to the antiques and collectibles world grew out of Ruby Lane president Tom Johnson's love of 50's California Pottery (he has complete sets of Franciscan "Autumn" and "Trio"), many pieces of which were acquired via the Web. As the Internet was in its infancy, searching shops online was difficult and often proved fruitless. The idea was hatched to create an easy-to-use online community of shops that showcase quality, pre-screened, antiques and collectibles, finally allowing consumers to find the unique items they sought with ease. Following the great retail tradition of naming businesses with a family name (think Bloomingdales, Neiman-Marcus or Sotheby's), Johnson named the site in honor of his mom, Ruby.
