On October 21, 2007, First UMC, an historically white congregation and Grace UMC, an historically black congregation merged. It was two years after the levees had broken. The sixty of us then, made a decision to let go and let God. We believed that God would form us and others into a new body—First Grace. We believed that God would honor our embrace of the Gospel message to show “no partiality,” and continuously create a space where the city can worship.
Every week we encounter the blessing and the challenge of our belief in this Gospel proclamation. Boldly, we believe that the love revealed in Christ Jesus is the most powerful change agent the world has known. We keep our eyes on the prize prophetically embracing a justice of loving acceptance as our task; and redemption, healing, deep joy and prophetic community as our reward.
We are a people committed to living with one another, not just near each other, and we strive to create a worship space and community where the least among us are equal among us. We invite you to join us on this journey.
