Our church has a rich history dating back to the days of the California gold rush. During that time a considerable number of miners were Southern Methodist. They rested from their labors on Sundays and met for worship in open-air devotions in what is now Morgan Chapel on Wards Ferry Road. The preachers stationed there journeyed on horseback to Summersville to conduct weekly services. The Reverend Currin decided the time was ripe for building a Methodist sanctuary in the rapidly growing town that would become Tuolumne City. He, along with some faithful followers, began work on the church. On September 28, 1902 the Methodist Church was dedicated as the melodious deep-toned bell pealed out its call to worshippers. On October 26, 1952 while laymen services were being held, the church was completely destroyed by fire. The only articles saved were the pulpit Bible, the offertory plates and a piano. The church was rebuilt with community support and on September 29, 1957, members completed the final phase with a dedication of the belfry and steeple.
