Baruch College shared The Sidney Harman Writer-in-Residence Program's post.
Fascinating talk by Fall Harman writer Russell Shorto on October 17th, drawn from his research on the American Revolution and the origin of the Founding Fathers' philosophy that "all men are created equal." Shorto traced the concept back in time to 17th Century Europe, to such thinkers as Descartes. In his new book, Revolution Song: A Story of American Freedom, to be released in early November, Shorto focuses his narrative history lens on the lives of six characters including President George Washington and freed slave Venture Smith, whose slave narrative describes how Smith bought freedom for himself and his family. In his quest for personal freedom, Smith gained economic freedom as well purchasing over 100 acres of property that he passed on to one of his sons.
