This week we were unexpectedly visited by John Moore and Jim Robbins of Bangor Savings Bank who presented the Augusta Housing Service Corporation with a donation of $2,000 to support our ongoing work! John Moore has served as the Senior Vice President of Community Development Banking at BSB for many years and has been a tremendous supporter of our efforts at Augusta Housing. At his retirement celebration, attendees were asked to vote for two organizations in Augusta to receive a donation from the bank and we were a winner. Jim Robbins from Bangor Savings Bank stated, "This is a small token of our appreciation for the work you are passionate about. Safe, decent and affordable housing is the corner post from which all other community development is possible. We truly appreciate your contributions." We are so thankful for the generosity and support of John Moore and Bangor Savings Bank! Thank you!
Grants from the Augusta Housing Authority will be available to help fix up and preserve deteriorating housing stock in the city.

AUGUSTA – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Augusta Housing will host an informational meeting about its new Great Neighborhoods program this Wednesday, April 5th from 4-6pm at the Lithgow Public Library Community Room. This new multi-family housing rehab program will use $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to address the city’s deteriorating housing stock through grants made available to private landlords. For an apartment building to be eligible for assistance it must be located within the City of Augusta, have between two and seven rental units, and 51% of its tenants must have household incomes that do not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income, as determined by the U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development. The City of Augusta was awarded the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Housing Assistance Program Grant by the state Department of Economic & Community Development during last year’s round of grant competitions. The program will be administered by the Augusta Housing Authority. Since 2013, Augusta has experienced an epidemic of lost rental units. Augusta Housing Authority and City records show that close to 500 units of rental housing have been lost or are at imminent risk of being lost due to fire or serious life-safety code violations. This loss of units and lack of replenishment of housing stock has resulted in a severe shortage of suitable rental housing for low to moderate income persons. The Great Neighborhoods program will work to stabilize and preserve at-risk rental housing while improving the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Apartment building owners interested in taking part in the program are urged to attend the April 5th event. Applications for the program will be available at the meeting.
