Buy healthy on a budget! How can you get MORE local fruits and vegetables on a limited income? With programs such as Maine Harvest Bucks, shoppers using SNAP/EBT benefits get bonus local fruits and vegetables for every SNAP dollar spent at participating farmers’ markets, Community Supported Agriculture farms, and retail outlets that sell local produce. The program varies, but is very easy to use everywhere. Here's how it works at most locations: 1) Arrive at the market and check in with customer service or the info booth 2) Shop as you normally would, and buy local food 3) Check out at the info booth or with a cashier and pay with your EBT card 4) For every $5 of SNAP/EBT you spend on local food, you'll get a voucher for $5 worth of local fruits and vegetables to spend next time you shop 5) Keep buying local and get more local fruits and veggies! Some locations also give you money off your total purchase right away when you buy local fruits and vegetables. Fruit and vegetable bonus dollars can be spent on locally produced fruits and vegetables, either fresh or processed with no salt, sugar or fat added (apple cider and frozen blueberries count!).
