City of Newport News, VA - Government shared Newport News Police Department's photo.
Statement from Police Chief Myers on the Fountain Way Shooting.
CHIEF MYERS’ STATEMENT ON FOUNTAIN WAY SHOOTING In response to the incident that occurred early this morning in the City Center area, there will be assigned foot patrols during the peak entertainment business hours commencing immediately to allay any public concerns. Patrol officers assigned to that section of the Precinct will also be increasing their patrols in this area. Despite the fact that this unusual incident occurred on one of the quietest periods of activity during the week for this area, the NNPD will focus 7 days a week on the area to ensure the safety of patrons. Additionally, the Central Precinct commander has initiated ongoing discussion with some of the businesses in the immediate area of this incident to explore interest in any additional extra duty officers. These strategies have proven effective when responding to other areas of the city following unusual occurrences, and are necessary due to the high public use of this area. Newport News Police Communications Center received a call shortly after 12:30 AM of a shooting on Fountain Way near Thimble Shoals. Officers arrived to find three victims, a male and two females, being loaded into a private vehicle for transportation to the hospital. Ambulances were summoned and the three victims were taken to the hospital with lower extremity wounds that did not appear life-threatening. A fourth victim, female, was soon discovered to have been dropped off at the hospital after transportation by private vehicle with similar wounds. This is an ongoing criminal investigation, requiring limited release of information so as to not jeopardize the ability to prosecute the case. However, given the high degree of public interest with this incident occurring in a large entertainment district of our community, we wish to assure the community of the safety of this region. We have strong indicators that this was not a random incident. All of the victims in this matter were in the immediate presence of and associated with the likely target of the assault. None of the four victims are cooperating with the police investigation in spite of their close proximity to the source of gunfire. ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE WITNESSED THIS INCIDENT, OR HAVE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE OFFENDER(S), SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THE NNPD DIRECTLY OR THROUGH THE CRIMELINE. Over the history of City Center, it has been and remains a very safe place to visit, dine, and participate in activities. The very infrequent criminal activity in this area has been mostly limited to theft of items from unlocked vehicles, a preventable crime. Many of the businesses employ extra-duty police officers to augment the City Center security and our routine patrol staffing. In fact, a Newport News police vehicle was seen in the immediate area of this incident conducting parking enforcement checks just minutes prior to the shooting. In 2016, the only violent acts in the entire City Center area were at the now shuttered Magnuson Hotel and at a nightclub near Jefferson Ave. This is an active and dynamic investigation. As additional information becomes available we will disseminate it in a timely manner. If anyone has any information that can assist detectives in this investigation, please call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Crime Line callers may remain anonymous and never have to testify in court. If your tip leads to an arrest, you could be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,000.
