The impressive 'Luncheon on the Grass' panels in 'Monet: The Early Years,' were inspired by not only the Barbizon school, but also by French art of the previous century, which Monet cleverly referenced in his work. Monet also intended his painting to be a tribute and a challenge to fellow painter Édouard Manet's 'Luncheon on the Grass.' Christopher Johnson of our Community Affairs team took this photograph in Mendocino, California. He explains the story behind the photo: “Last year my wife and I decided to take Bill (our golden retriever) up to Mendocino, CA for the long Memorial Day weekend … The low sun provided the perfect lighting and I was lucky enough to capture this image of him among the wind and waves, looking so intently out to sea. I think what I love most about the photo is how noble Bill looks because in reality he's a bit of a goofball.”
