How do parents talk to students about challenging issues like youth suicide and mental health? We are here to help! Parents, community members and middle and high school students are invited to attend one of three upcoming events aimed at empowering attendees to talk about suicide and depression in productive, meaningful ways and to get help finding resources. During these interactive, free sessions, parents and students will learn how they can normalize conversations about suicide prevention, how to find resources in our community that support youth thorugh stressful times and how to help our children navigate current enterainment in ways that facilitate increased parent-child communication. These events are sponsored by Safe Schools Alliance, which includes leaders from local law enforcement, education and health services throughout the region. The Hope & Help events will take place throughout the region including: Redmond: May 31, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at High Desert Education Service District Bend: June 12, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Charles Bend Sisters: June 14, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Sisters High School La Pine: July 17, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at La Pine High School Crook County: July 26, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Barnes Butte Elementary School

We are SO EXCITED to announce the newly formed Superintendent's Student Advisory Team! The team will serve to offer insights about issues affecting local schools and students. The newly-elected officers for the team are: President Darian Wilson, of La Pine High School Vice President Zemirah Kamanya, of High Desert Middle School Secretary Izzy Armstrong of Pilot Butte Middle School “Listening to student voices is important to me. My goal is to better understand the experiences of our students, so I can better serve them,” said Superintendent Mikalson. “I am excited to see what this diverse team of dynamic and engaged students can accomplish together.” “I’m really looking forward to working with other students and the Superintendent to change our schools for the better,” said Darian, who said he’s excited to take on the role of president.

We were proud to showcase the Career and Technical Education classes at Bend Senior High School for Gov. Kate Brown this week. She was able to see first hand some of the creative, hands-on classes our schools offer students, from culinary to engineering to wood manufacturing to electric cars! We know these diverse choices give students real world skills and keep them engaged in school. #CTE #IamBendLaPineSchools
