The patrol division is the backbone of the Department’s traffic enforcement efforts and with only 16 assigned personnel and 2 administrative personnel, the division not only answers calls for service and investigates all matters of criminal complaints, they also contribute the lion’s share of effort that is directed by the Department in the area of traffic enforcement. Each year, manpower fluctuates and the demands of the division’s resources are stretched, but the division manages to successfully combat all types of division is divided into four rotating shifts that work 12-hour tours of duty. Four Sergeants command these shifts. We are excited to announce that two K-9 units are now on patrol.
Sheriff's Emergency Response Team ( )
The Sheriff's Office along with the Lexington City Police provide a part-time tactical team. Having a properly trained and equipped tactical team reduces the time it takes to respond to a situation and allows for officers on the roads with higher skill sets. The team trains monthly on different scenarios that may arise ensuring properly trained personnel are ready to respond to an emergency at a moment's notice.
Dive Team
The Sheriff's Office also has a five person Dive Team that concentrates on underwater recovery.
Courthouse Security
The Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office Court Services Division consists of 5 full time bailiff's and two part-time Bailiffs. The division provides court security in three county courts and is responsible for transporting prisoners to and from the court complex. The bailiffs are also responsible for the transportation of the mentally ill (TDO’s), out of state extraditions, assistance with civil process as well as juvenile transports to facilities outside Rockbridge County.
School Resource Officer
The Sheriff's Office also stations a school resource officer at the Rockbridge County High School. Deputy Steve Burgdorf is available to students, parents, faculty and staff of the Rockbridge County School System.
