Great things were debuted at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital! The radiation oncology team held an open house to introduce a new piece of technology, called the Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator. The TrueBeam allows the team to deliver higher doses of radiation with greater accuracy, reducing harm to healthy tissue and organs. This also allows them to provide Surface Guided Radiation Therapy, so if a patient moves slightly, the beam automatically pauses and resumes when appropriate. We are so grateful for this addition to further provide the safest and best care to our patients. Pictured in 2nd photo: Cancer survivor and artist, Sandra Fink May, created these three-dimensional portraits from the plastic mesh masks used to immobilize the upper body of patients receiving radiation therapy treatment for cancer of the head and neck. Sandra is pictured with her radiation oncologist, Dr. Catherine Park, next to one of her portraits and the type of mask that inspired her.
