Good news: all the recent rain has triggered a beautiful spring/summer bloom here in Boston. Not-so-good news, particularly for the 4 in 10 people that think flood coverage is included in their home insurance: It's not. On the other hand, most of our clients' policies include sump pump/water back-up coverage, one of the first tools we recommend for mitigating the cost of a potential flooded basement. Such coverage typically costs hundreds if not thousands less than FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program. If you are concerned about the risk of water damage to your home, or if your lender is requiring that you buy flood insurance, let us know. We can educate you on your options, the benefits, and the costs. http://cbsn.ws/2nYJtwq Don't be one of the 4 in 10 people who find out flood damage isn't covered...after suffering a loss. -Dan
The National Flood Insurance Program expires this fall, but will Congress act in time to renew it, or even better, fix it?

Biking. Driving. Texting. As a cyclist, driver, parent, risk & investment management professional, every day I walk the line between confidence that I won't be a cycling statistic and hyper-awareness of how our kids use their devices. - More than 2 cyclists die every day in a bicycle/motor vehicle crash. - 11 teens die every day as a result of texting and driving. So, this weekend I enjoyed a blissful three hour bike ride, including two hours on the road and an hour of cyclocross in the woods. While I carved through the woods at Foxboro State Park, an 85 year old cyclist hit a car in Dover, a cycling hot-spot a few towns over. Was texting a contributor to that crash? Was it the cyclist? We may never know. Take a moment, however, to watch this and share it with your teen drivers: http://bit.ly/2oid1s7 Whether you are behind the wheel or riding two, please be careful. -Dan

Insurance is designed to predict future events; self driving cars lack enough history on which to base predictions. n.pr/2nvhB2G

Self-driving cars and accidents: who is at fault? Should the car value a passenger's life differently than a pedestrian's? Big questions!
