Have you ever wondered why some people tend to get the better jobs and you work just as hard, but never get the opportunity. It may be that they are investing in themselves. They may be going back to college and getting more education or they are spending more time trying to learn their trade to be better than the next person. I was one of these people. Until I was able to show management that I was interested in my job and had the ability to move up, I was stagnant. I read everything that I could get my hands on as it pertained to codes and things that I was dealing with. No one paid me to do this, but I knew it vital to my career. This put me in the position where I was looked at differently. I believe the same things applies to National Certification. When I started Base Line Data, Inc. I had no certifications. I was considered an excellent inspector, but people wanted to see paperwork. Certifications wasn’t something that was required prior to 1985. Once I moved over to BLD full-time, I acquired my CWI, API-510, API-570, API-653, NACE and API-1169. All of these certifications will give me a first-look from companies at finding a good paying job. The many years of experience in the construction industry will never hurt me. My encouragement to all people wanting to get ahead is for them to acquire National Certifications. The certifications in themselves will help, but you must also acquire the experience to go with it. If you want to get ahead, work at it every day. No one owes you a living, you have to show them that you are capable of performing the task.
