In 1917, the General Assembly created South Carolina's Highway Department for the purpose of planning, construction and operation of the state highway system consistent with the needs of the public. Almost a century later, with over 41,000 miles (90,000 lane miles) of roads and over 8,400 bridges, South Carolina has the 4th largest state-maintained highway system in the nation. Our vision is to deliver, operate and maintain a world-class, 21st century, multimodal transportation stystem that enables the Palmetto State to continue to grow its economy, enhance communities and improve the environment.
