The Resolute revolution began in 1994 with a challenge between two lifelong friends—one a collegiate rowing coach, the other a renowned racing boat builder. Steve Gladstone had spent almost three decades building the winning rowing programs at Princeton, Harvard, Berkeley, and Brown Universities to become one of the most respected coaches in the sport.
Meanwhile, longtime childhood friend Eric Goetz was fast becoming one of the premiere racing boat builders in the country. With nine modern America’s Cup racing yachts to his credit, Goetz enjoyed ribbing Gladstone about the “stone aged” craft he was racing. Finally, the coach told his friend to either put up or shut up. Unable to resist the challenge of building the ultimate rowing shell, Goetz agreed to join forces with Gladstone. The racing revolution was on.
In 1994, Steve Gladstone and Eric Goetz approached renowned marine architect Jim Taylor about helping them to further develop a revolutionary new racing shell and hull design. Taylor had been intimately involved in America’s Cup competition, designing five yachts, including two winners. He was immediately sold on the challenge. The three dubbed their top secret undertaking “Project Z,” and the Resolute brand was born.
