Highbridge Voices was founded in 1998 by the Highbridge Community Development Corporation, a non-profit housing and management corporation with a mission to create homes for families and people with special needs. Highbridge Voices provides 120 children exceptional musical and academic programming twenty hours weekly, thirty-three weeks a year at its facility on Merriam Avenue. Weekly activities include individual voice lessons with conservatory-trained teachers, music theory classes based on the New York State standards for music, as well as tutoring and homework sessions, SAT prep, and skill-building academic classes; all under the supervision of New York State certified teachers. The mission of Highbridge Voices is to inspire excellence in the lives of children of the Highbridge community through their active participation in the performing arts. Through the rigorous training required to perform classical vocal music, students learn lessons about self-discipline, delayed gratification, and teamwork. These lessons are then transferred into other aspects of the students' lives - academic performance, character development, and interpersonal relationships.
