In early 1968, a young couple, Chris and Dorothy Pappas moved from New York City to Long Island and started D&L Coffee Service. They operated out of their garage. Chris delivered coffee to the original 25 customers in a 1961 VW Bug with no back seat. Over the next two years, the coffee company began to grow and the name was changed to Colonial, but the same personal customer service was provided. In 1972, Chris hired his cousin, Gary Contes, as a part-time salesman. Gary, a student at the time, was eager to help grow the business. After 35 years, Chris decided it was time to sell Colonial in the family. Gary, along with his sons Justin and Brandon, took over in January 2003. Today Colonial continues to grow, offering new items including state of the art single cup brewers, ultra-premium small batch roasts, and estate grown coffees. Over the last 40 years many things have changed. Colonial now operates out of a modern warehouse and the coffee is delivered by a fleet of vehicles. However, not all is different. Chris remains active as an advisor to Gary, and Colonial is still dedicated to the same things that have kept it successful for so long:
