The Cost: The Department of Labor estimates that 15% of the nation's workforce is illiterate, costing the country $225 billion each year in lost productivity, remedial basic skills training, unrealized tax revenue, etc. On average, an illiterate adult earns 42% less than a high school graduate. Oklahoma's Department of Corrections reports that 20% of those in the estate's prisons read below the sixth grade level.
