Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area - Colorado Parks and Wildlife added an event.
PLEASE NOTE: This hike was altered from its original location due to the amount of snow at Lily Pond. Call AHRA at 719-539-7289 to register and receive more information. New hike info is as follows: Event Description: A short fun hike will be conducted in the scenic northern Fourmile Recreation Area in the area of the Old Midland Railroad Grade. The loop will be designed so that hiking will be done on the existing roads, trails, and a major wash in the area – NO cross-country foot travel will be done in the snow. The route will be adjusted to the snow conditions on the day of the event. We will have fantastic views of the snowy Upper Arkansas Valley and the Sawatch Mountain Range as well as close-up granitic boulder formations of the Arkansas Hills. Special Conditions * There could be snow on the ground and amounts will dictate the route taken. Be prepared to walk in the snow (bring snow gators). Too much snow depth will cause us to have to cancel the event due to the wet conditions and energy needed to break deep snow. * Only if you want to stop at the Collegiate Peaks Overlook fee site, either a daily or annual Colorado State Parks pass is required for each vehicle to use them. If you do not already have an annual pass, daily passes are available for purchase at the Collegiate Peaks Overlook for a fee of $7.00. * Pets are allowed in this area and should be on a leach or under direct command – some of the trails/roads are shared with bicycles and vehicles * Not appropriate for children under 8 years of age What to Bring * Snow gators for lower leg and ankle protection from deeper snow * Picnic lunch * Plenty to drink * Snacks * Comfortable hiking shoes – trails have few rocks but washes are sandy and rocky in some spots * Sunscreen * Extra layers of clothing in case it starts cold or is windy, and a hat and gloves for protection * Waterproof outerwear if there is a prediction for snow that day Event Fee: There is no fee for the event. Distance: Approximately 3 to 4 miles depending on the snow conditions Elevation Gain: Approximately 400 feet maximum depending on the route Highlights: Beautiful mountain and rugged shallow canyon scenery with sweeping views of the Upper Arkansas Valley and the snow-capped Sawatch mountains. Jamie had a great time teaching Lake County Intermediate’s fourth graders about healthy ecosystems! She used tin foil river models to explain how both living and non-living elements play critical roles in keeping our river healthy. Here's to the next generation of educated, responsible adventurers! #ColoradoOutdoors
